pup loaf recipe
- Total Time: 65 minutes
- Yield: 8–10 servings (for dogs) 1x
- Diet: General
Description
This pup loaf recipe offers a hearty, homemade meal or treat for dogs, made with lean ground meat and nutrient-rich vegetables. It’s simple to prepare and packed with goodness, providing a healthy alternative to processed snacks for your furry friend.
Ingredients
- 675 g (1.5 lbs) lean ground meat (beef, turkey, or chicken), 85-90% lean
- 1 cup (120 g) shredded carrots, finely shredded or chopped
- 1 cup (120 g) green beans, finely shredded or chopped
- 0.5 cup (120 g) rolled oats or 1 cup cooked brown rice (or gluten-free oats)
- 1 large egg
- 0.5 cup (120 ml) unsweetened applesauce or pure canned pumpkin
Instructions
- Prep Your Veggies: Finely shred carrots and chop green beans thoroughly (using a food processor for speed if desired). Preheat your oven to 190ยฐC (375ยฐF).
- Mix Everything Together: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, shredded carrots, green beans, oats or rice, egg, and applesauce or pumpkin. Mix thoroughly with your hands until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture is uniform.
- Form the Loaf: Press the mixture firmly into a 22 x 11 cm (8.5 x 4.5 inch) loaf pan, ensuring it is compacted evenly. Alternatively, shape it into mini loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake to Perfection: Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the loaf is firm to the touch and cooked through. An internal temperature of 71ยฐC (160ยฐF) for ground meat indicates it is safely done. (If edges brown too quickly, loosely tent with foil.)
- Cool and Serve: Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing. This resting period is crucial to prevent crumbling and helps the loaf hold its shape better.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, or freeze individual portions for longer storage. For variations, substitute oats/rice with mashed sweet potato for a grain-free option, or add chopped spinach, peas, or bell peppers (avoiding onions/garlic). If too crumbly, add an extra egg or unsalted broth; if too moist, ensure veggies are well-drained.
