meatball sub recipe with frozen meatballs
- Total Time: 40 minutes
- Yield: 4–6 servings 1x
- Diet: General (adaptable)
Description
This classic meatball sub recipe with frozen meatballs offers a delicious, easy dinner solution, perfect for quick family meals. It combines savory marinara, melting cheese, and convenient ingredients for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- 1 bag (450 g) frozen cooked meatballs (beef or chicken, ensure no pork or alcohol)
- 1 jar (700 mL) marinara or spaghetti sauce (no alcohol)
- 4–6 sub rolls or hoagie buns
- 1–1.5 cups (225 g) shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese (microbial rennet, or Monterey Jack)
- Optional: olive oil
- Optional: garlic powder
- Optional: dried oregano
- Optional: red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Heat Meatballs & Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine frozen meatballs (450 g) and marinara sauce (700 mL). Simmer 15-20 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring until steaming hot. (If sauce looks too thick, add a splash of water.)
- Prep Rolls: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Split sub rolls lengthwise, not all through. Place cut-side up on a baking sheet. Toast 3-5 minutes until lightly firm.
- Fill Rolls: Spoon 3-4 warm, fragrant meatballs and sauce into each toasted roll.
- Add Cheese: Top liberally with shredded mozzarella (225 g), covering meatballs completely.
- Melt to Perfection: Bake subs on the baking sheet for 5-8 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden. Broil 1-2 minutes for extra browning, watching closely.
Notes
Stock up on frozen meatballs and sauce when on sale for quick meal prep. Check local bakeries for fresh sub rolls for best results. For gluten-free, use gluten-free sub rolls and ensure meatballs/sauce are certified GF. For dairy-free, skip cheese or use a dairy-free alternative. For vegetarian/vegan, opt for plant-based frozen meatballs and confirm sauce is vegan.
